Italy Declares a 6-Month State of Emergency Due to Increasing Irregular Immigration Arrivals
In response to the rising number of irregular migrant arrivals in Italy, the country’s right-wing coalition government has declared a 6-month state of emergency. The government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, hopes the emergency declaration will allow them to manage migrant flows more effectively and efficiently.
The decision was made following a cabinet meeting where the recent surge in immigration was discussed, including overcrowding in reception centers and the need to return individuals who do not meet asylum conditions. The state of emergency will also allow for additional emergency measures to be implemented.
Reports indicate that the flow of irregular migration in Italy has tripled compared to last year. According to the Ministry of Interior, 31,292 irregular migrants have reached Italy by crossing the Mediterranean between January 1 and April 11, compared to 7,928 in the same period last year.
The government has also limited the activities of ships belonging to non-governmental organizations that carry out rescue operations at sea. The move is meant to discourage illegal immigration.
The state of emergency will last for 6 months, and a resource of 5 million euros has been allocated for emergencies. While the emergency declaration is hoped to tackle the problem, the irregular migration flow from North Africa to Italy continues.
