Minister Oğuz evaluated the Central Mesarya Plain Irrigation Transmission Line Construction Part 2 Project: “Anatolia’s water will be a cure for drought in the TRNC”

Dursun Oğuz, Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources, said that once the water brought from Turkey meets the agricultural lands in the Mesarya Plain, the drought problem will disappear and the variety of agricultural products will increase.

Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources Oğuz, in his evaluation to the AA correspondent regarding the Construction of the Second Part of the Central Mesarya Plain Irrigation Line Project to be started by Turkey, noted that the water brought from Mersin by a pipeline under the sea will be transported to the country’s largest plain.

Stating that the water brought from Turkey has been used mostly for drinking and individual use, Oğuz said that the first part of the project has been completed to deliver this water to agricultural areas, and that the construction of the transmission line will be started to deliver it to the agricultural areas in the Mesarya Plain.

Pointing out that only agricultural drought-resistant agriculture is practiced in the Mesarya Plain due to the arid climate of the TRNC, Oğuz said, “As the water brought from Turkey meets the agricultural lands in the Mesarya Plain, our drought problem will disappear and our agricultural product variety will increase. We expect an increase in milk and cheese production with its positive effect on animal husbandry due to feed production and pastures. Anatolia’s water will be a cure for drought in TRNC. he said.

Oğuz stated that with the completion of the first part of the project, the citrus orchards in Güzelyurt will receive water and said that irrigation water will be given to 97,200 decares of land for the first time after the water is delivered from Güzelyurt to Mesarya via a 44-kilometer long transmission line.

Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources Oğuz pointed out that due to the agricultural drought, the TRNC farmers have to make a production completely dependent on the seasonal conditions, and emphasized that with the project, which is planned to be completed in 3 years, the dependence of the producers on the seasonal conditions will decrease and the agricultural drought will come to an end throughout the island.

Pointing out that the drinking water transported from Turkey to the TRNC by pipes under the sea is very important for them, Oğuz said, “We will have lifeblood in agriculture. This project is as important as bringing drinking water to the Island.” said.

Noting that they believe that the agricultural lands in the Mesarya Plain will continue to receive water, the export of agricultural products of the country will increase in direct proportion to the increase in agricultural production of the TRNC, Oğuz also expressed that millions of dollars going abroad will remain in the country due to the decrease in some of the agricultural products they import.

Expressing that the project contributed to new employment in the field of agriculture, Oğuz said that in the Güzelyurt and Mesarya Plains, where the water brought from Anatolia will be supplied, fruits, vegetables, peanuts, olives, potatoes, citrus fruits, pomegranates, artichokes and grains (barley, wheat), feed He added that agricultural production such as green grass, silage corn, alfalfa will make an economic contribution of approximately 468 million liras to the country.
